Basic insurance (KVG):

Basic insurance is compulsory for every person residing in Switzerland. You cannot change this obligation, but you can choose the company with which you conclude it. You are also free to choose the doctor model or the deductible.

Deductible opportunities:

CHF 300 / CHF 500 / CHF 1000 / CHF 1500 / CHF 2000 / CHF 2500

The more often you use medical services, the more likely it is that a low deductible is advisable. Conversely, the highest deductible makes sense if you see a doctor very rarely during the year. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium charged.

Doctor models:

Free choice of doctor: You can go to a doctor or specialist of your choice at every consultation. This is the most expensive model.

General practitioner / HMO model: Each consultation must take place via the general practitioner you have chosen or via the HMO Center. If necessary, your in-house doctor will refer you to a specialist. This is probably the most common model.

Telephone model: In order to be able to see a doctor or specialist if necessary, you must always first contact your health insurance company by telephone. This is the cheapest option.

Accident coverage:

If you have a regular job and work more than 8 hours a week, you are insured against accidents by your employer. Accident insurance in addition to basic insurance is not necessary. If this is not the case, especially with children, it is imperative that you include accident cover.

Supplementary insurance (VVG):

Supplementary insurance (VVG)

Not a must - but highly recommended. You can close gaps in insurance coverage with supplementary insurance.

In the case of supplementary hospital insurance, there is a general ward, semi-private ward, private ward and flex models. Depending on the department, there are differences between the responsible doctors, hospitals and the sharing of hospital rooms with other patients.

Complementary medicine, medication, emergency treatment abroad, transport, physiotherapy, gym fees, glasses, contact lenses, etc. are offered in different types and coverage amounts depending on the health insurance company. It's worth comparing!

Prenatal registration:

If you are pregnant you should think about the prenatal registration of the baby in good time. This ensures that your child is insured from the first second and from the first breath, just as you calmly decided a few months earlier. In the worst case, your baby would not be insured in an emergency, which can lead to high costs if, for example, you had to bear the incubator costs yourself in the newborn intensive care unit.
