Basic insurance (KVG):

Basic insurance is compulsory for everyone living in Switzerland. You cannot influence this obligation, but the company you take out the insurance with can. You are also free to choose the doctor model or the deductible.

Franchise opportunities:

CHF 300 / CHF 500 / CHF 1000 / CHF 1500 / CHF 2000 / CHF 2500

The more often you use medical services, the more a low deductible is recommended. Conversely, the highest deductible makes sense if you visit the doctor very rarely each year. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium owed.

Arztmodelle:

Free choice of doctor: You can go to a doctor or specialist of your choice for each consultation. This is the most expensive model.

General practitioner/HMO model: Every consultation must be done through your chosen general practitioner or through the HMO center. If necessary, your general practitioner will refer you to a specialist. This is probably the most common model.

Telephone model: In order to see a doctor or specialist, you must first contact your health insurance company by telephone. This is the cheapest option.

Accident coverage:

If you have a regular job and work more than 8 hours a week, you are covered by your employer's accident insurance. Accident insurance in addition to basic insurance is not necessary. If this is not the case, especially if you have children, accident cover should be included.

Supplementary insurance (VVG):

Supplementary insurance (VVG)

They are not a must, but are highly recommended. You can close gaps in your insurance coverage with additional insurance.

For example, supplementary hospital insurance offers general wards, semi-private wards, private wards and flex models. Depending on the department, there are differences in terms of the responsible doctors, hospitals and sharing of hospital rooms with other patients.

Complementary medicine, medication, emergency treatment abroad, transport, physiotherapy, gym memberships, glasses, contact lenses, etc. are offered in different types and coverage depending on the health insurance company. It's worth comparing!

Prenatal registration:

If you are pregnant, you should think about registering your baby before birth. This will ensure that your child is insured from the first second and from its first breath, just as you decided a few months ago. In an emergency, your baby would not be insured, which could lead to high costs if, for example, you had to cover the incubator costs yourself in the neonatal intensive care unit.
